Your Paleo Plate

The driving force behind the paleo diet is eating the way that nature intended. Let’s face it, food plays a huge part in our everyday life, and many of the health problems that we face are due to what we are putting into our body. Far from the natural state that food would have in nature, most of what we buy at the store is loaded with unhealthy toxins and chemicals..and we never even realize it.

The standard American diet is full of processed foods and refined sugars that wreak havoc on our system. When we are able to get back to a routine of clean eating and more natural eating habits, we can reverse our chances of developing certain diseases, autoimmune issues and even cancer. Just by changing what goes into our bodies, we can reduce the risk of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, depression, infertility, and more. This is what makes the paleo diet so amazing, it focuses on replacing these unhealthy foods with lean, natural alternatives.
So, what does your paleo plate look like?

Remember, eating paleo means ditching unhealthy and processed foods. The first step to building your paleo plate is knowing what to avoid. Stay away from grains, starches, legumes, dairy, alcohol, and anything else that is clearly processed or refined. When thinking about meat, always try to go organic, anything unhealthy your meat has eaten will affect you once you eat that meat.

Your paleo plate should be broken into three parts:

The largest portion of each meal should be fresh fruits and vegetables. These will be your main source of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. If you can’t find fresh produce, or if your favorites are out of season, try to do some research for foods that are in season. Another option is to look for your fruits or vegetables in the frozen foods aisle instead.

After you’ve selected your fruits and vegetables, add a small portion of nuts or seeds to the mix. These are rich in Omega-3 and monounsaturated fats, which research has proven can radically reduce the risk of degenerative diseases. If you aren’t a fan of nuts and seeds, olive oil is a good choice. But if at all possible, it is best to eat unaltered food that is found in nature, and nuts and seeds fit that bill.

Finally, finish off with a fist sized portion of wild or free range meat, such as deer, elk, wild fowl, or seafood.

The best part about the paleo diet is that it does not limit you. Unlike diets that leave you feeling starved and craving more, eating paleo will leave you full and satisfied. Because a paleo plate is designed to keep your blood sugar steady, you will feel fuller for longer periods of time. And unlike diet fads that have you counting everything you put into your mouth when you eat Paleo, you are truly satisfied.
